A Light In The Darkness

One of my favorite parts of the Christmas season is the lights. Light is a major theme in the Bible. He Bible ways in I John 1:5, “God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.” The very first command that God gave in creation was, “Let there be light.” Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.”

John 12:46: “Jesus said, “I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer wander in darkness.” He’s not talking about physical darkness here. He’s talking about personal darkness.

Everybody has dark days. You don’t want to get out of bed. You’re afraid to face the world. You don’t feel like it’s worth the effort. You just want to throw in the towel. You don’t want to see anybody. We all go through dark days.

Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is near to those who are discouraged; he saves those who have lost all hope.” The first way God encourages us, is when He says, “I’m with you.” “The Lord is near” – He has not left you. Some of you have had tough times this year. Maybe 2011 was a disappointing year. You didn’t get the promotion you thought you were going to get. You were not invited to teach in a Bible School. You didn’t close a sale that you thought you were going to close. Your hopes and dreams and the things you’d hoped would happened didn’t materialize.

Where is God in all this? He’s where He has always been. He hasn’t left you. Emmanuel – God with us! He encourages us in disappointing times by reminding us that we never go through anything alone. The darkest part of the night is when there is no light reflecting on the earth.

If you want to get out of the dark days, then you must choose to start living in the light and love of Jesus Christ. That’s a choice that we have.

The first step for many is that you need to receive God’s gift to you – Jesus Christ. What a perfect time to renew Him in your life during this time of the year. Maybe you’ve drifted away. Your heart has grown cold. You’ve got away from what you know. What would God say to you? “Come on home! Come back to Him in faith, believe that the birth in the manager was the beginning of bring light back to the world through the infilling of His Spirit into everyone’s life. Come back home for Christmas. There is a light to guide your path!”

John begins his Gospel by calling Jesus “the Word.” Then John says, “In him was life; and the life was the light of men.”True and genuine life is embodied in Christ. His life was he light for everyone. God’s truth, nature, purpose, and power are made available to all people through Him. The light of Christ shines in an evil and sinful world, controlled by Satan. The majority of the world has not accepted His life or light because the darkness has not “comprehended it.” Jesus lights every person heart who hears His gospel by imparting a measure of grace and understanding, in order that the person may freely choose to accept or reject that message. Apart from this light of Christ, there is no other light by which we may see the truth and be saved.

The light of Christ shining in a dark world brings hope to those that are wandering in darkness. Darkness disappears when He moves upon your spirit.
